{"id":41,"date":"2019-05-24T15:06:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T15:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deverehouse.co.uk\/?page_id=41"},"modified":"2019-06-10T02:07:50","modified_gmt":"2019-06-10T02:07:50","slug":"access-and-facilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.deverehouse.co.uk\/?page_id=41","title":{"rendered":"Access and Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"95\" height=\"138\" src=\"https:\/\/deverehouse.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/crest2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Access Statement for\nDe Vere House, Water Street, Lavenham<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De Vere House is a grade 1 listed private dwelling\noffering accommodation in the east wing of the house with two double bedrooms,\nboth offering en suite facilities, internet access and access to a private\nsitting room and courtyard garden for the exclusive use of guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house dates from the 15th century with many\nunique period features but was partially demolished and renovated in the 20th\ncentury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following statement summarises the facilities at the house.\u00a0 For further information visit our website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deverehouse.co.uk\/\"><strong>www.deverehouse.co.uk<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or telephone 01787248151.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pre-Arrival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The property is situated on Water Street in\nLavenham. &nbsp;There is an hourly bus service to neighbouring villages and the\nfacility to hire cars in the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearest rail stations are Sudbury (15 minutes),\nStowmarket (20 minutes) and Colchester (30 minutes).&nbsp; All times are by\ncar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several local taxi services which we can\nbook for you by arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearest airports are Stanstead (60 minutes) and\nNorwich (90 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We provide further details on how to find the village and the house in our Information Pack that we send to you at the time of booking.\u00a0 Directions can also be found on this website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Arrival and Car Parking facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests have access to parking at the front of De\nVere House on Water Street and may park in our drive next to the house when\nloading and unloading.&nbsp; De Vere House\nparticipates in the cyclist friendly scheme with cycle storage in our Summer\nHouse behind a locked gate onto the driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driveway is gravel and is lit automatically at\nnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ensure we are available when guests arrive to\nassist with luggage, and agree approximate arrival times with our guests to\nensure this is the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Main Entrance and Reception<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests enter through the front door on arrival but\nthen have access through their own entrance and gateway for the remainder of\ntheir stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front door is a cat and kitten door (similar to\nthe Judas gate at a castle).&nbsp; There is one step up to the front entrance\n17cm high.&nbsp; The kitten door is 124cm high and 36.5cm wide.&nbsp; The cat\ndoor is 272cm high and 152cm wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bell is to the right hand side and guests are\nasked to ring the bell on arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front door is locked, chained and bolted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The door enters into the hall way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hall way is 188cm wide and 304cm high.&nbsp;\nImmediately on entering the hall there is a small step down (5cm).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests are directed into their private sitting room\nto the left through a gothic arched oak doorway.&nbsp; The door is 78cm wide\nand 226cm high, with a step 8cm high, dropping 17cm the other side.&nbsp; This\ndoor is bolted except for during breakfast (0800-1100).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Guest\u2019s private entrance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At all other times after their arrival, guests\naccess their accommodation through a private gate and entrance, using their own\nkeys to lock and unlock both the gate and the entrance door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The side gate has one step (12cm) and access is\nthrough a gate which is 81cms wide and has a circular handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two steps (11cms and 19cms high, 38cms wide) rise\nto the entrance door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entrance door is oak panelled and 81cms wide,\n207cms tall, with a small step up into the guest\u2019s sitting room (1.5cms).&nbsp;&nbsp; It has a carved lintel above which is the\nremains of the first example of borrowed light in English architectural history<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Public Areas: Guest\u2019s sitting room (the\nReading Room)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private sitting room for guests with one Knole sofa\nand two leather armchairs, a small desk and chair, two occasional tables, a\nbookcase, table lamps and a fridge.&nbsp; The floor is oak boarding and sealed,\nthen covered with a Persian rug.&nbsp; The room has an open fire with\nprotection grill.&nbsp; The staircase to the bedrooms leads from this room and\nis oak with a linseed oil finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the walls are the De Vere Monuments, the only\ncopy outside of the British Library of these sketches of the De Vere tombs\n(since destroyed).&nbsp; There is then a\nreplica of the famous tapestry of the Marquis of Mdena and Baron of Paciano, an\nancestor of the owners, some brass rubbings, a silk painting of the house and a\ncollection of old model ships and nutcrackers.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staircase leads off to the left and then turns\na half turn to a small top landing.&nbsp; There are 12 stair treads, each 78cms\nwide and 21cms tall.&nbsp; There is a handrail on the left hand side for the\nfirst flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Public Areas: Guest\u2019s dining room (the Dining\nHall)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breakfast is taken in the Dining Hall, a large room\nwith French windows into the gardens, a secret door into the kitchen, another\ninto the Chinese Room or Sitting Room (which is private), with portraits of the\nDe Vere family around its walls, an oak dresser and 8 foot long (Henry VIII)\noak table.&nbsp; It also has an open fire (and\nthe family motto carved above the stone fireplace).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breakfast is taken <em>normally<\/em> between 0915 and 1100 but can be earlier by prior\narrangement.&nbsp; It is a full English\nbreakfast plus Continental and includes &nbsp;the\nfollowing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>De Vere House<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Breakfast Menu<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A selection of cereals, muesli, freshly made porridge and yoghurts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">followed by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fruit salad, freshly made each morning (a mixture of seasonal fresh\nfruit from the garden and the village)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">followed by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toast, pastries and croissant (bread and croissant are fresh each\nmorning from the bakers, pastries are whatever special breads are available each\nmorning from the bakers) together with a selection of jams, preserves and\nmarmalades (served with two of the day\u2019s Times, Observer, Guardian, Mail or\nIndependent as requested)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">followed by a Full English Breakfast of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pork sausages (two types from the local Butchers)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rashers of bacon (Old Spot and Beer cured from the local Butchers)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black pudding (from the local Butchers)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fried, poached or scrambled (to your choice) freshly laid free range\neggs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grilled tomatoes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fried chestnut or field mushrooms in herb butter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caramelised red onions in herbs and red wine vinegar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sauteed potatoes or a toasted potato waffle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French toast or Fried bread<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">served throughout with<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A selection of bottled water, fruit juices and cordials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tea (Earl Grey and Suffolk Breakfast), percolated coffee and\/or Whittard\u2019s\nhot chocolate.&nbsp; Decaffeinated Tea and\nCoffee available on request<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vegan and Vegetarian\nalternatives, Soya and other Nut milks available by prior arrangement at time\nof booking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following can also be preordered before arrival: Smoked salmon and scrambled egg or Eggs Benedict (instead of the full English and depending on season).\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access to the Dining Hall Chamber is across two small steps (2cms then 14cms) along the Entrance Hall (passing deer antlers, various pieces of armour, flintlock pistols, and various pewter and brass ornaments with carved ceiling beams and the remains of the arched entrance to the former cross hall), passing the stone spiral staircase (with its unique carved brick hand rail) and up a further step (16cms up) through a gothic arch and double oak doors (hand carved to fit the arch) and above which is another early example of borrowed light.\u00a0 The Dining Hall has oak floor boards, a Persian silk rug and wool\/silk mix runner, the Hall is carpeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dining table is rectangular and refectory\nstyle, 8 foot by 3 foot (seats 10-12 but a maximum of four sit for breakfast\ntogether) known as Henry VIII style consisting of three long 1 foot wide planks\nof oak; it is cracked and uneven with age.&nbsp;\nThere are four oak carvers (with cushions as required) for guests.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The menu is available on each table and can be\nprovided in large print.&nbsp; Breakfast is\nserved using stainless steel service, silver condiments, toast racks, candelabra,\nname holders and napkin rings, porcelain plates, cups, saucers and bowls, glass\njugs and white linen napkins.&nbsp; The table\nis candlelit with a log fire burning in the autumn and winter.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full English breakfast is served to the table on\nhot plates (with hot rivets and heated serving dishes for second helpings on the\nsideboards).&nbsp; Oven gloves are provided\nfor the guests.&nbsp; Breakfast can also be\ntaken in the Courtyard Garden during the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bedrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two guest bedrooms (John de Vere and Lady\nElizabeth Howard) on the first floor both with lockable doors, en suite\nbathrooms, TV and coffee-making facilities, wifi internet access, toiletries and\nhair dryers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beds are turned over and aired each day, linen\nand towels are changed between guests and every three nights, professionally\nlaundered in the village. There are no feathers in our pillows or duvets.&nbsp; Additional bed linen, duvet and towels are\navailable on request with spare bed linen and towels also stored in the base\ndraws of both wardrobes.&nbsp; Towelling\ndressing gowns for guests are found in each wardrobe and are laundered between\nguests and every three days (or as requested by a guest).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each guest is provided on arrival with a freshly\nlaundered bath towel, towel, hand towel and flannel (wrapped in a ribbon).&nbsp; Shoe cleaning kits and stitching kits for\nclothing and buttons can be found in the dressing table drawers of each\nroom.&nbsp; Toiletries including bath salts,\nsoaps, shower gel, cotton wool and cotton wool buds are also to be found in each\nroom.&nbsp; Disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste\nare available on request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both rooms and the connecting landing and staircase\nare then full of paintings, pictures, and old oak carvings and corbels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>John de Vere room<\/strong>&nbsp;is accessed\nthrough an oak Suffolk plank door that is 70cms wide and 198cms tall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room has a four poster bed which is 208cms\nlong, 153cms wide and 57cms from the ground.&nbsp;\nThe front window opens out onto Water Street.&nbsp; It is secondary glazed for warmth and to\nreduce noise from the street.&nbsp; The room\nis beamed and still shows two sets of marks on the front beams (one set from\nwhen the house was originally erected and a second set from when it was\nre-erected).&nbsp; In the bathroom is then the\nremains of the shuttered medieval window, fitted when a tax was paid on glazed\nwindows and which can be seen in pictures of the house from the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a walnut antique wardrobe, two bedside\ntables (one incorporating a small set of drawers), a mahogany dressing table,\nbedroom chair and a chaise longue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room is lit by four wall lights and a large\noak-framed window (north facing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately on the right, on entering, is the\nbathroom.&nbsp; The bathroom door is 66cms wide and 191cms tall and opens\ninwards.&nbsp; The bathroom has a ceramic-tiled floor, roll top bath (58cms\nhigh), toilet (46cms floor to rim and 16cms either side), and wash basin (85cms\nfloor to rim).&nbsp; Bathroom lights, shower and towel rail are all activated\nby pulleys which run from the ceiling to 100cms from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bath has a shower unit and circular shower curtain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a mirror and shaver point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bathroom has three windows all with roman\nblinds and secondary glazing, looking eastwards towards the White Horse and\nWater Street<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>John de Vere is a reference to both the 12<\/em><sup><em>th<\/em><\/sup><em> Earl of Oxford whom originally built the house and then the 13<\/em><sup><em>th<\/em><\/sup><em> Earl of Oxford whom extended it, building the front gable and about whom the symbols above the door refer (the Wool Jack and the Wild Boar)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>Lady Elizabeth Howard room<\/strong>&nbsp;is\naccessed through an oak Suffolk plank door that is 74cms wide and 197cms\ntall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room has a mahogany double four poster bed\nwhich is 203cms long, 137cms wide and 57cms from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a mahogany antique wardrobe, two bedside\ntables, two sets of drawers and a two seater sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room is lit by four wall lights and two sash\nwindows (south facing).&nbsp; The room is also\nbeamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the right is the bathroom.&nbsp; The bathroom\ndoor is 64cms wide and 189cms tall and opens inwards.&nbsp; The bathroom has a\nceramic-tiled floor, roll top bath (58cms high), toilet (46cms floor to rim and\n24cms either side), and wash basin (85cms floor to rim).&nbsp; Bathroom lights,\nshower and towel rail are all activated by pulleys which run from the ceiling\nto 100cms from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a mirror and shaver point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bath has a shower unit and circular shower\ncurtain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An oak timber runs across the bathroom, 209cms\nabove the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lady Elizabeth refers to three ladies associated with the house: Lady Elizabeth de Vere nee Howard, mother of the 13<\/em><sup><em>th<\/em><\/sup><em> earl of Oxford, whose symbols of Plaitz and Scales are above our door, Lady Elizabeth de Vere nee Scrope, the wife of John de Vere 13<\/em><sup><em>th<\/em><\/sup><em> Earl of Oxford, a rebellious young lady (known as Elizabeth Howard\u00a0 whilst under house arrest and held captive by John Howard, duke of Norfolk).\u00a0 Elizabeth was captured after a year as a pirate in 1473 and on being found guilty of witchcraft .\u00a0 She was released when John de Vere slew John Howard at Bosworth in 1485 and was granted the Baronies of Plaitz and Scales (the symbols above our front door)\u00a0 in 1487.\u00a0\u00a0 Also refers to Lady Elizabeth Howard whom was a daughter of Edward de Vere and became the Countess of Essex (infamous for the poisoning of her husband in the time of James I)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shops<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cash back facilities are available at both\nCooperative Stores, Heeks and the Pharmacy.&nbsp; There is a Post Office in the\nTourist Information Centre and a Cash machine in the Cooperative Store at the\ntop of the hill.&nbsp; There is an excellent\nselection of shops all within a short walking distance ranging from bakers,\ngrocers, butchers and hardware, to china, tapestries, clothing and textiles,\nantiques, reproduction furniture, picture galleries, toys and collectibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Treatment rooms<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a Spa and plunge pool at the Swan on the\nHigh Street and Water Street within a two minute walk.&nbsp; Massage, Aveda and\nBeauty Treatment is also offered for female guests at Vinesse Hair and Beauty, Lavenham\nBeauty or Weavers Spa (all in the village within a five minute\u2019s walk)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further details can be\nprovided to guests at time of booking.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Leisure facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an active tennis club with all weather courts in the village.\u00a0 Football and cricket grounds are also located by the village church with matches each weekend in season.\u00a0 An international standard golf course and a municipal golf course are both available within a 15 minutes drive.\u00a0 Atlantic Health Spa is located in a neighbouring village, 10 minutes drive from the house.\u00a0 Clarice House Spa, Leisure, Gymnasium, Massage and Beauty Treatment Centre is just 18 minutes drive (outside Bury St Edmunds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further details can be provided to\nguests at time of booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Outdoor facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village has many walks, including alongside the\nold railway tracks and housings to Long Melford and across Clay Hill to\nPreston.&nbsp; Details are provided for guests in the Reading Room and guests\ncan borrow any of the local guide books and maps kept there<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village also has a Tourist Information Centre which provides information on local sights, places of interest, leisure facilities and walks.\u00a0 During the season, Blue Badge guided tours are available throughout the village.\u00a0 Guest are given a free copy of the owners book on Ghosts and Ghost stories in the village and so may do their own ghost tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attractions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lavenham is a 15th century wool town of great\narchitectural and historical interest and both of the owners of De Vere House\nwould be happy to provide guests with a history of the house and the village.&nbsp; A print out of a brief history of the village\nand another on its ghosts can be found in the Guest Information in each room<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village has many annual festivals and events including a Literary weekend, Art festival, Jazz festival, Dickensian Christmas Fayre, monthly Farmers markets, and an August bank holiday carnival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grounds and Gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests have access to a small and private courtyard\ngarden with four chairs, large table, parasol and lanterns for their use.&nbsp;
